I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: He shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire...
These are the words of John the Baptist. He was the baptizer with water. We know him as the forerunner of Christ. He heralded the words of Isaiah 40:3, Prepare ye the way of the Lord... Just as John's New Testament prophecy heralded the coming of Christ, his baptizing with water heralded the later baptism of the Holy Ghost. Jesus Himself was baptized by John. Water baptism is one's personal testimony of his or her cleansing from sin by the blood of Jesus Christ. It means that person is dead to their old nature and has risen to newness of life in Christ.
