Therefore if the Son makes you free you shall be free indeed.
Real freedom comes more by choice than by chance. There are degrees of freedom; it's up to us to choose what degree of freedom we want. In the prelude to the verse above, some Jewish people speaking to Jesus tell Him, "We are Abraham's descendants, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How can you say, you will be made free?' These people apparently failed to consider their bondage to the Roman Empire at that time, but Jesus was actually referring to another kind of bondage. He hold them they were in bondage to sin. Only Jesus could deliver them from those sins. Up until that time, the people seemed happy with their limited degree of freedom, but the Lord told them that they could know the highest degree of liberty through Him - that is, a life of genuine freedom, living in deliverance from all of their sins.
